What to Do When Your AC Stops Cooling

Warm air from the vents is usually simple. Ice on the lines is your cue to shut it off.

Check the obvious

Thermostat in cool, set below room temp, fan on auto. Breaker on. Outdoor unit getting power. Filter not a brick.

Look at the outdoor fan

If the fan is still and the box is humming, do not keep resetting the breaker. That needs electrical testing with a meter.

If you see ice, stop

Ice means airflow or charge. Running it that way can kill a compressor. Turn it off and call.

Do not add refrigerant yourself

You do not have the gauges or the license, and a leak is still a leak.

Call with symptoms, not guesses

If the fan spins but the air is warm and there is no ice → gets a faster, cheaper visit than “I think it needs refrigerant”.

Next step

If the house is already hot, call the office - or the emergency line during a heat warning.
