Canadian summers are short. That is not a reason to let a dirty filter and a dying capacitor test electrical readings with a meter for three weeks straight.

Change the filter before July

A packed filter is the cheapest way to make an AC work hard and still blow warm. Write the size on the cabinet.

Give the condenser air

If the outdoor unit is a shrub, it cannot reject heat. A foot of clearance is not a suggestion.

Stop cooling an empty house to 19°C

Set it to something livable when you are home. A 4-degree setback when you are out is enough; wild swings make it work harder when you return.

Fix the charge the right way

Refrigerant should not need regular topping up. If it is low, there may be a leak that needs attention.. A top-up without a leak search is how you pay twice.

Service it in May

Capacitors fail on the first hot Saturday. A spring check is cheaper than a heat-wave dispatch.
