One outdoor unit now heats into the minus thirties and cools in July. The furnace stayed as backup.
The homeowner wanted lower winter bills without gambling the house on a unit that quits at −15°C. We specced a cold-climate heat pump and kept the existing mid-efficiency furnace as dual-fuel.
New pad, line-set, and a disconnect sized for the unit. Thermostat lockouts were set so the furnace only comes in on the worst design days.
First winter the family ran mostly on the heat pump. They still had gas heat in their pocket when a polar snap sat on the city for a week.
